Thank you for visiting our website here in the parish of St Matthew & St Wilfrid Sunderland. We are a parish church in the deanery of Wearmouth and the diocese of Durham, we are part of the Church of England.
Our Church has two very distinct congregations which are both lively, welcoming and made up of all ages – while we have two distinct identities we are committed to being one church.
We meet in both the parish church (St Matthew’s Silksworth) and the community centre in Doxford Park (St Wilfrid’s Doxford). On a Sunday at St Matthew’s you will find a congregation central to the Anglican tradition with a robed choir, weekly Holy Communion, tradditional worship and Sunday School. At St Wilfrids Sunday worship is less formal and more interactive while maintaining a commitment to the Anglican tradition also with a Sunday School.
For the most we do everything together to show our commitment to the communities that we serve, from Christenings and Weddings to our weekly pop-up cafe ‘The Arches’, from Bible study groups to ‘Messy Church’.
Within our parish we are blessed to have, and work closely with our Church of England Primary School ‘Benedict Biscop Academy’ and our Church of England Secondary School ‘The Venerable Bede Academy’ who are a significant part of our church family and worshiping life.
We seek to serve our communities and to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ . Please explore our website and find out more about us, even better come and see for yourself, come and join us at St Matthew & St Wilfrid Sunderland.
With every blessing,
The Reverend David Tolhurst, Vicar
